Traditions!

On most occasions when you hear the word tradition it is associated with sports and success. People and places without tradition are usually not successful. To me traditions are more important at home. These are usually simple things that you don't think about often, but do all of the time, and your kids will end up passing along to their kids.

These traditions can be as simple as saying prayers each night, to saying the blessing before meals, to holiday traditions. Steph and I have some traditions with our kids that we think are important. Here are a few of them.

-Holding hands and saying the blessing before each meal
-Prayers and a book before bed
-When we eat biscuits we have a special chicken that we put them in to keep them warm
-Breakfast at the Dairy Queen after church in Groom
-My dad and I hunting together each year
-Sitting in the same place at church every week
-Caden and Kaitlyn always opening the same side of the gate when we go to the ranch
-Drinking coffee out of my Winnie the Pooh cup(I know...I know...but true)

The word tradition comes from the Latin word traditio which means "to hand down" or "to hand over."

I am attaching a clip from Fiddler On The Roof that talks about tradition. My favorite part is when he says,"I will tell you how this tradition got started..........I don't know." I am sure that most of use don't know how traditions actually got started. I think that even makes them more special. Another thing funny about this clip is that you can relate the characters in the movie to people that we all know.

I challenge each of you to think about what traditions you are handing over to your children or family. A strong tradition is very important.

ps....put a comment and tell others what your traditions are

We also make the kids hold hands around the dinner table when we pray. I makes us feel more "together" I guess. I bet they start putting up a fight when I have 5 teenagers at home!!

Jason also has a little saying that he says to our children every night when we tuck them in. His grandfather said it to his dad, his dad said it to him, and now he says it to our kids...."good night, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite, keep your nose clean, don't eat any dirt." I love it!! It makes me happy every night when I hear him saying it to them.

Great post! Thanks for sharing.

We love traditions. We too hold hands and pray at the table for meals, so Amy teenagers will do it. LOL and we also hold hands and pray all 4 of us laying on my bed at night then everyone goes to their own rooms. Matthew my youngest even has a secret hand shake just he and I do before bed. Love it, since I am the only girl in my house.Keep up the good blog here Tucker.
